Neal M. Lonky, MD, MPH

Physician. Inventor. Builder of compassionate diagnostics.

Kaiser Permanente Histologics CEO UC Irvine Faculty

For over three decades, Dr. Neal M. Lonky has pursued a singular mission: improving how medicine diagnoses and treats patients through innovation grounded in clinical experience.

The Clinician

Dr. Lonky joined Kaiser Permanente in 1986, building a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynecology that spans more than three decades. As Director of Colposcopic Services in Orange County, he has led cervical cancer screening programs that have touched thousands of patients' lives.

His clinical expertise encompasses colposcopy, cervical cancer prevention, laparoscopic surgery, and comprehensive women's health care. This frontline experience with patients has been the foundation for everything that followed.

The Inventor

The best medical innovations come from physicians who see daily what works and what could work better. Dr. Lonky observed that traditional tissue sampling methods, while effective, often caused unnecessary patient discomfort. This clinical insight led to a fundamental question: could there be a gentler way?

That question led to the development of Kylon medical fabric, a patented non-woven textile that enables tissue sampling through gentle friction rather than sharp instrumentation. The result is diagnostics that maintain clinical accuracy while prioritizing patient comfort.

The Builder

In 2008, Dr. Lonky founded Histologics to bring these innovations from concept to clinical reality. Under his leadership as CEO, the company has developed a portfolio of patented technologies with applications spanning gynecologic diagnostics, wound care, and beyond.

His work has been recognized with nominations including the Orange County Business Journal's Innovator of the Year, reflecting the impact of translating clinical insight into real-world medical devices.

The Teacher

As Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UC Irvine School of Medicine, Dr. Lonky shares his expertise with the next generation of physicians. His teaching emphasizes the same principles that guide his practice and inventions: clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and the importance of questioning conventional approaches.
